I started training with Coach Cole in March 2018 and had two goals: finish 5K races in the top three of my age group; and break 8 minutes per mile. In my four 2018 races, I finished first twice, second once and third in the Dallas Turkey Trot, which included more than 3,000 runners and over 60 in my age group. I also saw my per-mile pace fall from 8:30 to nearly 7:30.

Coach Cole customized my training around my knee and hamstring issues by supplementing my two runs per week with two bike and swim workouts, an incline treadmill workout and low-impact run drills. This ensured I got in enough cardio, leg and form work without overworking my knee and hamstring. He also joined me at the track regularly (early in the morning or in the evening to accommodate my work schedule) to work out and to ensure my form was good and push me to my limit.

Coach Cole has been insightful, creative, encouraging and a great role model every day since I began training with him. During that time, he showed me my XFactor in 5K racing, and I finally broke through my 8-minute-per-mile barrier. As a result, I’m in the best shape in over a decade — and motivated to continue training to get my 5K time down to where it was more than 15 years ago.

Cole has coached me for most of 2018. I have had my best [triathlon] and running year yet, and I attribute that to my hard work and his great coaching. Every race that I have been in this year, I have been on my age group podium. I did two 5K races a week apart, did a personal record the first week, and shaved a minute off for a new personal record the second. Woohoo! At first, I wasn’t too sure about getting a coach, but I’m glad I made the investment. He really helped me transition into the sport and got me started off on the right foot. [Within a year], Coach Cole was able to fix my technique in a lot of areas and helped me get my times down. My swim pace went from 2:17 to 1:44 per 100 meters. My bike pace went from 14.9 to 19 mph. And my run pace from 9:20 to 7:59 per mile. Thanks to his help, I’ve won my age group in the last couple races I competed in. I really enjoy the workouts he creates, and he’s great at basing them around my schedule. Overall, he’s a cool guy to work with! I always have a fun time when we meet for workouts. Truly a good coach!
